The rise of forensic accounting in India: A game changer in financial fraud detection

Abstract
Forensic accounting has emerged as a vital discipline in India, bridging the gap between accounting, auditing, and investigative techniques to detect and prevent financial fraud. With the rise of corporate scandals, banking irregularities, and complex financial crimes, traditional auditing mechanisms often fall short of uncovering hidden manipulations. Forensic accounting addresses this gap by integrating legal knowledge, data analytics, and specialized investigative skills. In recent years, India has witnessed a surge in demand for forensic accountants, particularly following high-profile frauds such as the Satyam scandal, Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud, and non-performing asset (NPA) crises. Regulatory bodies like SEBI, RBI, and the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) have increasingly recognized the importance of forensic accounting in strengthening corporate governance and financial transparency. Moreover, the advent of technology-driven forensic tools—such as digital forensics, data mining, and AI-powered analytics—has revolutionized fraud detection processes. This paper examines the rise of forensic accounting in India, exploring its role as a game changer in combating financial crimes, strengthening regulatory frameworks, and fostering investor confidence. It also highlights the challenges of professional training, ethical dilemmas, and regulatory gaps that need to be addressed for the discipline to achieve its full potential in the Indian context.
